World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses. Interestingly, this day is also celebrated as Children’s day in India. It is very appropriate that these two occasions fall on the same day because children are becoming more susceptible to diabetes nowadays and the best gift we can give our children and ourselves alike is awareness on the implications of diabetes and stress on its prevention.

The World Health Organization’s estimation of the prevalence of diabetes in adults indicates an expected total rise of more than 120% from 135 million in 1995 to 300 million in 2025. This includes Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) which is defined as ‘carbohydrate intolerance with first recognition or onset during pregnancy’ and Pre-GDM, a term that denotes known diabetic subjects who become pregnant.

The prevalence of diabetes in India is growing tremendously and so is its awareness. While knowing about diabetes in general is very important, we need to also focus on diabetes in pregnancy with more seriousness, as two generations are at risk and because prevention of diabetes starts from there. Women with GDM are at increased risk of future diabetes and their children are at risk of childhood obesity and diabetes later in life. This fact should warn the physicians and general public alike to the necessity to devote special attention to this problem.

GDM is associated with obstetric, maternal and neonatal complications. Uncontrolled diabetes in pregnancy leads to spontaneous abortions, birth defects - especially heart problems in the baby, preterm labour, big baby, hypertension, sudden in-utero death, delayed & difficult labour and consequently more bleeding during delivery. Mothers are at increased risk of urinary tract and vaginal infections and Type 2 Diabetes in future. Babies have immediate problems of respiratory distress, hypoglycaemia (low sugar) and electrolyte imbalance and long term complications of obesity and diabetes. Hence, it is essential to screen all the pregnant women for glucose intolerance by oral glucose test. It is usually done between 24 -28 weeks of gestation and in selected high risk women even earlier.

A team approach is needed in management of Pregnancy in Diabetes with the obstetrician, diabetologist, dietician and paediatrician working in concert. Intensive monitoring, diet and insulin therapy are cornerstones for management. The importance of educating pregnant women with diabetes (and their partners) about the condition and its management cannot be overemphasized.

All pregnant women must be aware of when to screen for GDM and GDM mothers must know about its implications for herself and her baby, diet, lifestyle changes, self-glucose monitoring and insulin therapy. Foetal growth must be evaluated with ultrasound and foetal echo done to rule out cardiac problems. Maintenance of mean Plasma Glucose level ~105 mg% is ideal for good foetal outcome. This is possible if Fasting and Post prandial levels are around 90 mg/dl and 120 mg/dl respectively. Insulin is essential if medical nutrition therapy fails to achieve normal glucose levels.

Prevention of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in GDM is based on achieving maternal blood glucose as close to normal as possible. Gestational diabetic women require follow up. Glucose tolerance test with 75g oral glucose is performed after 6 weeks of delivery and if necessary repeated after 6 months and every year to determine whether the glucose tolerance has returned to normal or progressed. Diabetes in Pregnancy needs holistic care for good health of women and her child.

The theme for World Diabetes Day is “Diabetes Education and Prevention” and the campaign slogan for 2010 is “Let’s take control of diabetes. Now.”

நண்பனின் தந்தை இறந்துவிட்டதைக் கேள்விப்பட்டு ஓடிச்சென்று நண்பனுக்கும் நண்பனின் குடும்பத்தினருக்கும் உதவியாகவும் ஆறுதலாகவும் இருக்கும் சூழ்நிலை நம் எல்லோருக்கும் என்றாவது ஒரு நாள் ஏற்படும். அப்படி ஒரு நிலை எனக்குச் சமீபத்தில் ஏற்பட்டது - நான் சற்றும் எதிர்பாராத ஒரு நாளில். அவர் நண்பனின் தந்தையாக மட்டுமில்லாமல் என்னுடைய நலம்விரும்பியாகவும் பல வகைகளில் என் மொழியார்வத்துக்கு வழிகாட்டியாகவும் இருந்தவராதலால், அவருடைய இழப்பு எனக்கும் எவ்வகையிலும் மறக்க முடியாத ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள இயலாத ஒன்று என்றாகிப் போனது. அவர் தென்மறை நித்தலின்பனார் - என் கல்லூரித் தோழன் ஏந்தல் இரும்பொறையின் தந்தை.

முதன்முறை நான் அவரைப் பார்த்தது 14 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் - நானும் நண்பன் ஏந்தலும் முதலாண்டு மருத்துவம் பயிலும் போது - அவர்களுடைய இல்லத்தில். ஆங்கிலக்கலப்பின்றித் தமிழ் பேசுவார்; தமிழ்க்கலப்பின்றி ஆங்கிலம் பேசுவார் - இரு மொழிகளிலும் பேச்சிலும் எழுத்திலும் வல்லவர். அப்போதெல்லாம், உரையாடலினூடே எங்கேனும் ஆங்கிலச் சொல் வந்து விடுமோ என்று பயந்து பயந்தே அவரிடம் பேசுவதைத் தவிர்ப்பேன். ஆனால், தமிழிலோ ஆங்கிலத்திலோ ஏதேனும் ஐயமென்றால் அவரிடம் கேட்டால் உடனே சரியான தீர்வு கிடைக்கும். அது போன்ற தருணங்களில் தைரியத்தை வரவழைத்துக்கொண்டு என் வினாவினைத் தொடுப்பேன். எனக்குத் தான் பயமே தவிர, அவர் எப்போதும் என் கலப்புத்தமிழைக் கடிந்து கொண்டதில்லை. பேச்சில் மெல்லிய எள்ளலும் நகைச்சுவையும் இருக்கும்; ஆனால் என் மனம் நோகும் வகையில் எப்போதும் எதுவும் சொன்னதில்லை. அதே நேரத்தில், நான் எடுத்தாண்ட கலப்புத்தமிழுக்குச் சரியான தமிழ்ச்சொற்களை மறைமுகமாக எனக்கு உணர்த்தவும் மறந்ததில்லை அவர்!

கல்லூரி மலரில் என் முதல் கவிதை வெளியானதை மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் பாராட்டிவிட்டு இரண்டொரு சந்திப்பிழைகளைத் தவிர்த்து கவிதை நன்றாகவே வந்திருப்பதாகச் சொன்னார். அப்போது தான் முதன்முறையாக என்னாலும் சான்றோர் மதிக்கும் அளவுக்கு எழுத முடியும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை என்னுள் விதைக்கப்பட்டது. பின்னர் பல்வேறு சூழ்நிலைகளில் பல்வேறு தளங்களில் தமிழ், ஆங்கிலம், வாழ்வியல், அரசியல், தமிழர் வரலாறு என்று நிறைய செய்திகளைக் கொடுப்பார். அவரிடம் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தால் நேரம் போவதே தெரியாது. நான் உண்மையாகவே அவரது கருத்துகளை ஆர்வமாகக் கேட்கிறேன் என்பதை அவர் உணர்ந்த நாள்முதலாய் என்னிடம் தனிப்பட்ட அன்புடனும் உரிமையுடனும் அவர் உரையாடத் தொடங்கினார். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் நானும் அவரும் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தால் சில மணி நேரங்களுக்கு எங்களை வேறு வேலைகளுக்கு இழுக்க முடியாது என்று அனைவரும் கிண்டல் செய்யும் அளவுக்குச் சென்றது.

தொய்ந்து போயிருந்த எனது தமிழார்வத்தை நான் மீட்டெடுக்க அவரே விளக்காக இருந்தார் என்றால் அது மிகையாகாது. என் தங்கையின் திருமணத்திற்கு என் நண்பர்களை அழைக்கத் தனித்தமிழிலும் ஆங்கிலத்திலும் வாசகங்கள் வரும்படியாய் அழைப்பிதழை எழுத வேண்டும் என்று ஆசைப்பட்டவுடன் எனக்கு வந்தது அவர் நினைவு தான். அதுவரை வெறும் பேச்சாய் மட்டுமே இருந்த எங்கள் பழக்கம் எனக்கு அவரைப் பற்றிக் கற்பிக்காததை அவருடன் அமர்ந்து அழைப்பிதழுக்கான படித் திருத்தங்களை செய்த நாட்கள் எனக்குக் கற்பித்தன. படைப்பின் முழுமைக்கு எழுத்துப்பிழை, சந்திப்பிழை மட்டுமின்றி எழுத்துரு அமைப்பும் கூட எவ்வளவு ஆழ்ந்து கவனிக்கப்படவேண்டிய ஒன்று என்பதை அப்போது தான் நான் உணர்ந்தேன்.

மேலும், திருமண அழைப்பிதழ் தானே, ஒருவருக்கு எழுதியதை எடுத்துக் கொஞ்சம் மாற்றி மற்றொருவருக்குக் கொடுத்து விடலாமே என்று எண்ணாமல், பெண்ணைப் பற்றியும் மணமகனைப் பற்றியும் எல்லா செய்திகளையும் கேட்டறிந்து, அவை அத்தனையையும் இரு மொழிகளிலும் கவிதை நடையாக எழுதித் தருவார். பின்னாளில், என் திருமணத்திற்கு அழைப்பிதழ் எழுதும் போது எனக்காக ஆய்வு செய்து எனக்குப் பொருத்தமானதொரு சங்கப்பாடலை எழுதி என்னை நெகிழச் செய்தார். என் தம்பிக்குத் திருமண வாழ்த்து மடல் எழுதும் போது கெ.டி.வி.ஆர். என்று எல்லோரும் ஆங்கிலத்திலேயே சுருக்கமாகக் குறிப்பிடும் என் தாத்தாவின் பெயரைக் ‘கொளத்தூர் வேங்கடர்” என்று அழைத்து அழகு பார்த்தார். நேரமின்மை காரணமாகவும் அவர் இங்கிலாந்துக்குச் சென்றிருந்த காலமாகவும் அது இருந்தமையால், எனது மற்றொரு தம்பியின் திருமணத்திற்கு அவரால் மின்னஞ்சல் வாழ்த்து மட்டுமே அனுப்ப முடிந்தது. அதற்குப் பிறகு அவரை நான் நேரில் பார்க்கவே முடியாமல் போய்விட்டது.

என் மகள் பிறந்தவுடன் நான் அவளுக்குத் தமிழ்ப்பெயர் சூட்டவேண்டும் என்று ஆசைப்பட்டதை அவரிடம் சொன்னவுடன் அவர் எனக்காக எடுத்த முயற்சிகளையும் செய்த ஆராய்ச்சியையும் நினைக்க நினைக்க மெய்சிலிர்க்கிறது. ‘எழில் ஓவியா’ என்ற பெயரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்திருக்கிறோம் என்று அவரிடம் சொன்ன போது, அது அவர் பரிந்துரைத்த பெயர்களுள் ஒன்றாக இல்லாத போதும், அவர் அடைந்த இன்பத்திற்கு அளவே இல்லை. குறுஞ்செய்தியிலும் மின்னஞ்சலிலும் “எழில் ஓவியம் சீரும் சிறப்புமாக வளர்கிறதா?” என்று ஆசையாய்க் கேட்பார். மற்றொரு முறை ஒரு உறவினரின் இரட்டைக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு பெயர் வைக்க வேண்டும் என்ற வேண்டுகோளுக்கு இணங்க மிகுந்த முயற்சியெடுத்து ஐம்பதுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட தமிழ் இரட்டைப் பெயர்களை உருவாக்கினார். தமிழ் அவருக்கு தடையில்லாமல் வரும் என்றாலும் இவ்வளவு முயற்சி தேவைப்பட்டதற்குக் காரணம் இதிலும் அவர் குழந்தையின் பெற்றோரின் விருப்பங்கள், பெயர் அழைக்க எளிதாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற அக்கறை, புதுமையும் நவீனமும் தமிழ்ப்பெயர்களில் மிளிர வேண்டும் என்ற அவா போன்ற பலவற்றை எண்ணிச் செயல்பட்டது தான்.

மொழியார்வம் தவிர்த்து அவரிடம் நான் பார்த்தது தமிழினம் மீது அவர் வைத்திருந்த பற்று மற்றும் நாத்திகமில்லா பகுத்தறிவு என்ற தெளிந்த முதிர்ந்த உறுதியான மனநிலை. இலங்கைப் பெருங்கொலைகள் குறித்தும் தமிழ் தேசியம் குறித்தும் மிகுந்த மனவேதனையுடன் எழுதப்பட்ட அவரது கவிதைகள் மற்றும் அவரது இளமைக்காலத்தில் அவர் இவற்றிற்கென எடுத்த நிலைப்பாடுகள், பங்கேற்றுக் கொண்ட போராட்டங்கள் போன்றவை வரலாற்று ஆவணங்களாகப் பின்னாளில் அறியப்படும் என நான் உறுதியாக நம்புகிறேன். அவ்வாறே, பகுத்தறிவு குறித்த அவரது கண்ணோட்டமும் ’பகுத்தறிவு’ பேசும் எவரும் எண்ணத்தால் கூட இயங்க முடியாத ஒரு உயர்ந்த தளத்தில் சுழன்று கொண்டிருந்ததை நான் கண்டிருக்கிறேன். பகுத்தறிவு இல்லா நாத்திகத்தையும் கடவுள் நம்பிக்கை உள்ளவர்களின் பகுத்தறிவு நோக்கையும் அவர் சான்றுகளுடன் விளக்கக் கேட்டு நான் வியந்திருக்கிறேன்.

இவையனைத்தையும் தாண்டி அவரைப் பற்றிச் சொல்ல இன்னொன்று உண்டு. அது: கிடைக்கும் எல்லாத் தளங்களிலும் தமிழ் வளர அவரால் ஆன முயற்சிகளை பலன் எதிர்பாராமல் செய்யும் பழக்கம். மக்கள் தொலைக்காட்சி முதல் இன்று பல தமிழ் வலைத்தளங்களில் உலவும் நவீன சொற்கள் வரை அவரது கைவண்ணத்தில் தமிழ் மேலும் அழகானதும் அறிவுசார்ந்த கலைச்சொற்களைப் பெற்று வலுவடைந்ததும் பலரும் அறியாத ரகசியங்கள். தமிழில் நேரடித் தட்டச்சு (யூனிகோட்) முறை வருவதற்கு முன்பே மிகுந்த சிரமத்துடன் தமிழில் தட்டச்சு முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொண்டிருந்தார். ஆர்குட், ஃபேஸ்புக், ப்ளாக்ஸ்பாட் என்ற அனைத்து தளங்களையும் கற்றுக் கொண்டு அங்கெல்லாம் நண்பர்களுடன் உரையாடுவார்.

என்னுடைய வலைக்குறிப்பிலும் முகநூலிலும் நான் எழுதும் எண்ணங்களுக்கு அவருடைய பின்னூட்டங்களைக் காண எப்பொழுதும் ஆர்வமாக இருப்பேன். சில நேரங்களில் பாராட்டாய், சில நேரங்களில் திருத்தமாய், அவருடைய எழுத்து எனக்குக் கைகொடுத்தும் கைதூக்கியும் விடும். என்ன தான் அவர் இவ்வுலகில் இல்லை என்று நான் உணர்ந்தாலும், இப்பதிவுக்கும் அவர் பின்னூட்டம் இடுவாரா என்ற பேராசை மட்டும் எழாமல் இல்லை. ஆனால், இனி அவர் வரப்போவதில்லை.

என்னைப் பொருத்தவரை அவரது மரணம் எனக்குத் தனிப்பட்டதோர் இழப்பு மட்டுமல்ல; தமிழுக்கும் தமிழர்க்கும் ஓர் பேரிழப்பு.

பி.கு.: தென்மறை நித்தலின்பனார் அவர்களைப் பற்றித் திரு. கு. அரசேந்திரன் எழுதிய வாழ்க்கைக் குறிப்பையும், அவருடைய நிழற்படத்தையும் இத்துடன் இணைத்துள்ளேன் – பின்னாளில் அவரைப் பற்றி ஆய்வு செய்யப் போகின்றவர்களுக்கு ஆதாரமாக.

தென்மறை நித்தலின்பனார் திருவடிப் பேறெய்தினார்

தென்மறை நித்தலின்பனார் எனத் தமிழுலகில் பெயர்பெற்ற சான்றோராய் விளங்கிய பெருந்தகை 27.09.2010 அன்று மாலை கோபிச்செட்டிபாளையத்தில் 6.30 மணியளவில் திடுமென மாரடைப்பால் காலமானார். இவர் 09.10.1945 அன்று ஈரோடு மாவட்டம் பெருந்துறை வட்டம் கம்புளியம்பட்டிச் சிற்றூரில் க.சி.இராமசாமி - வள்ளியம்மை ஆகியோரின் நன்மகனாய் பிறந்தார். நித்தியானந்தன் எனப் பெற்றோரிட்ட பெயரைத் தென்றமிழின்பாலும் மறைமலையடிகளார்பாலும் கொண்ட பெரும்பற்றாலும் தென்மறை நித்தலின்பன் எனப் பிறகு மாற்றிக் கொண்டார்.

கோவை அரசினர் பொறியியற் கல்லூரியில் பொறியியல் பட்டப்படிப்பைக் கற்கும்வேளையில் தமிழ்நாட்டில் 1965 இல் மூண்டெழுந்த இந்தியெதிர்ப்புப் போரில் நித்தலின்பனார் மாணவர் தலைவராய்க் களம்புகுந்தார். சிவனியப் பெருஞ்சான்றோர் ப.சு.மணியம் தலைமையில் மொழிஞாயிறு பாவாணர், பாவலரேறு பெருஞ்சித்திரனார் ஆகியோர் வாழ்த்துரைக்க அத்தாணியில் பிறந்த தீந்தமிழ்செல்வி தேவகாந்தியை 12.12.1973 இல் மணந்துகொண்டார். 1975ஆம் ஆண்டில் “சேரர்கொற்றம்“ என்னும் தமிழ்க்காப்புப் பேரமைப்பை உருவாக்கிய நித்தலின்பனார் கோவைமாநகரில் இருந்த பெயர்ப்பலகைகள் அனைத்தையும் தனித்தமிழில் மாற்றி எழுதும் பெரும்பணியைச் செய்தார். அடுமனை, குளம்பியகம் முதலான தனித்தமிழ்ப்பெயர்கள் தமிழ்ததெருக்களில் பூக்கக் காரணமாக இருந்தவர் இவரேயாவார். பல்லாயிரம் கோடி உருவாச்செலவில் செம்மொழி மாநாடு நடத்திக் கோவையைத் தமிழ்நகராகக் காட்டிய தமிழ்நாட்டரசின் 2010 பணிக்கு முன்னோடியாக நீடுபுகழ் நித்தலின்பனார் திகழ்ந்தார். கோவை மாநகர் முழுவதும் தமிழ்முழக்கம் செழிக்கத் தெருவெல்லாம் நடந்த அந்நாட்களில் நிறைமாதக் கர்ப்பிணியான தன் இல்லத்தரசி தேவகாந்தியையும் உடனழைத்துச் சென்று தமிழ்ப்பணி நம் குடும்பப்பணி என உலகிற்குணர்த்தினார். கோவையில் தாம் இருந்த இல்லத்தில் பாவாணரை சில மாத காலம் தங்கவைத்து அவருக்குக் குடும்பமே பணிவிடைசெய்தது. பாவாணர் நூற்பணியை அக்காலத்தில் நிறைவுடன் செய்தார்.

1975 இல் தம் அருமைத்தாயார் வள்ளியம்மை கடுமையான நோயினால் பாதிப்பிற்குள்ளாகிச் சாப்படுக்கையில் நொடிந்துகிடந்தார். அப்போது சென்னையில் நடந்த தமிழுரிமைப் போரில் பாவலரேறு பெருஞ்சித்திரனாருடன் கலந்துகொண்டு சிறைபுகுந்தார். பிணையலில் வெளியேற நித்தலின்பனார் மறுத்துவிட்டார். நித்தலின்பனாரின் மனவுறுதியை மேலும் ஊக்கும் முகமாக உடனிருந்த பாவலரேறு இரண்டு பாடல்கள் பாடினார். அவை "தண்டமிழ்த் தாய்பெறும் துன்பத்தினும், பெற்ற தாயின் துயரம் மிகப் பெரிதோ" என்பதும் "தமழ்த்தாய் பெறும் துயரைவிடத் தாயின் துயர் பெரிதோ" என்பதும் ஆகும்.

1978 இல் தமிழினத் தொண்டுக்காகவே திரு. நித்தலின்பனார் குடும்பத்துடன் சென்னை வந்து தங்கினார். தமிழ்-தமிழீழம் குறித்த ஆதரவாளர்களின் புகலிடமாக அன்னாரின் இல்லம் பொலிந்தது. பஃறுளி முன்றில்- 23,கோயிற் குறுஞ்சாலை, சைதை என்னும் முகவரியில் இருந்த அவ்விலத்தில் நித்தலின்பனார் 1990 வரை வசித்து வந்தார். பின்னர் அவர் கோவைக்கு குடும்பத்துடன் இடம்பெயர்ந்தார். கடந்த நான்காண்டுகளாகக் கோவையிலிருந்து பெயர்ந்து கோபிச்செட்டிப்பாளையத்தில் வாழ்ந்துவந்தார். எயினி இளம்பிறை, ஏந்தல் இரும்பொறை ஆகிய இருவரும் அவரின் பிள்ளைச்செல்வங்கள். மருத்துவர்களாக இவ்விருவரும் திகழ்வதுடன் மருமகன் மருமகள் ஆகிய இருவரையும் மருத்துவராகத் தழுவிக்கொண்டார்.

சேரர்கொற்றம் நிறுவிய நித்தலின்பனார் தன் பெயரை, பொறையன் என்னும் சேரவேந்தர்களின் பெயர்ப்போக்கில் விருப்பம் கொண்டதாலும் இறைமை தழுவிய மனவுணர்விலும் தென்றமிழ் மறை அடிகளிரும்பொறை என மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை பெயர்மாற்றம் செய்துகொண்டார். தன்வயிற்றுப் பேரனுக்கு எவ்வியன் இரும்பொறை எனப்பெயரிட்டார். உற்றார், உறவினர், சுற்றத்தார் ஆகிய பலரும் அவர்பால் சென்று தத்தம் செல்வங்கட்கு தனித்தமிழில் பெயர் சூட்டிக்கொண்டனர். கவின்முல்லை, நவில்யாழினி, சோனை முகில், புனலி, பவிழ் இளங்கதிர், நயநிகை இனியாள், ஓவியமென்பூ, மின்னகஞ்சேரல் போன்று அவர் சுட்டிய குழந்தைப்பெயர்கள் ஆயிரத்திற்கும் மேலாகும்.

மருத்துவர்களாகப் பணிபுரியும் மகனையும், மருமகளையும் காண இடையிடையே இலண்டன் சென்றுவந்த நித்தலின்பனார் ஆங்கிலேயரின் பழக்கவழக்கங்களில் தமிழ்ப்பண்பாட்டின் ஊற்றிருப்பதைக் கண்டு வியந்து பேசினார். இணையவலைத்தளங்களில் தொடர்ந்து மூழ்கியிருந்த நித்தலின்பனார் தமிழ்-தமிழர் நலன் பயக்கும் கருத்துக்களை அதன்வழி பரப்பிவந்தார். அகப்புறப் பகையால் தமிழும் தமிழினமும் அல்லலுற்றுச் சீரழிந்து வரும் இவ்வேளையில் மெய்யுரம் சான்ற தென்றமிழ் அடிகளிரும்பொறை - தென்மறை நித்தலின்பனார் குறைவாழ்நாளில் திடுமென மறைந்தது தமிழுலகிற்குப் பேரிழப்பாகும். அன்னார் நெறியில் தமிழ் - தமிழர் நலன் பேண உறுதியுடன் நாம் பணிதொடர்வோம்.

This is an article that I wrote about my grandfather, with inputs from my family members, for printing in the invitation card for the Inauguration of K T Venkatarama Reddy Endowment and the 1st Endowment Lecture. The invitation scans and further details are linked to the title of this post. I welcome one and all to the event on Saturday, July 3rd, 2010, at The Residency Hotel, Coimbatore at 6 PM.

I hope I have done some justice to my illustrious grandfather by trying to summarize his numerous achievements and outstanding personal virtues in a few words. I would be happy to know from you if you think I have succeeded in my humble attempt.

“A Winner All The Way”

Kolathur Thippi Reddy Venkatarama Reddy was born on 03-June-1924 in Kolathur, in present day Mettur Taluk, Salem District, in a poor agricultural family. He was the eldest son of Shri Thippi Reddy and Smt Gowri Ammal, amongst 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Though he was an outstanding student particularly in Mathematics, family situations forced him to quit schooling with 8^th standard, but he never gave up learning for life. He metamorphosed himself from an agriculturist into a small businessman, a change that required him to strenuously travel far and wide throughout South India. A keen observer, he went on to become a building contractor in succession, implementing the knowledge he gained in the process of networking with builders and masons. Self-confidence, perseverance, honesty and unshakeable belief in his vision were his only partners.

As a building contractor, some of his landmark buildings include the Mettur Hydroelectric Power Project, Dharmapuri collectorate, Paalaaru Bridge, Chembarambakkam Lake, College of Agricultural Engineering (in The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University campus, Coimbatore), Civil Aerodrome (Coimbatore), etc. With the support of his younger son Er V Loganathan, he moved on to promotion of apartments and introduced the concept of ownership flats to Coimbatore – Vijaydeepa Apartments in 1980. He was honoured for his achievements in the construction industry by being unanimously elected as the Founder Chairman of the Builders’ Association of India - Coimbatore Centre in the same year. He constructed 25 apartment and other building projects in Coimbatore during his lifetime.

With a burning desire to provide medical service to the community, he inspired his daughter Dr V Suseela and elder son Dr V Janarthanan to take up medicine as their profession. This formed the base for the realization of yet another of his dreams – KTVR Group Hospital, a multispeciality hospital in the heart of Coimbatore city on his birthday in the year 1990. He was a competitive first generation entrepreneur but at the same time considerate to one and all to such an extent that he never hesitated to teach the tricks of his own trade to any interested person. Unconditional support from his loving wife Smt V Siddhammal played a quintessential role in the successes he saw throughout his life.

An ardent believer in Gandhian philosophy, he always wore only khadhi. He contributed a lot to the community during his tenures as Ward Councillor and Panchayat Board President of Kolathur. He drew inspiration from his acquaintance with great leaders of yesteryears such as Shri K Kamaraj, Shri R Venkataraman, Shri C Subramaniam and a host of others in public life. Having started his construction career from Kolathur Panchayat water tank, he supported the local people in building high schools, temples and also promoted quality houses at a nominal cost next to Gowri Theatre and Thippi Reddy Thirumana Mandapam, which he constructed in memory of his parents in 1986 and 1995 respectively, in his hometown.

After achieving success as an agriculturist, entrepreneur, builder and healthcare promoter, he initiated his dream project – KTVR Knowledge Park for Engineering and Technology, in 2007 at the age of 83 years. As a man of word that he was, he saw to that the engineering college began to function, even as he was in the last few days of his life. He passed away as an educationalist on 07-July-2008 at the age of 84 years. Even after his life, he inspires his family members and admirers to follow his footsteps.

Shri K T Venkatarama Reddy’s life is full of encouragement for today’s younger generation. It is yet another proof that hard work coupled with practical wisdom and righteousness never fails to attain long-term success.

KTVR was truly a class apart – an era by himself.

Hypoglycemia in patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a common health disorder characterized by a myriad of clinical features that share the common denominator of increased blood sugar levels known as hyperglycemia. The term hypoglycemia refers to the state in which the blood sugar level drops below the acceptable lower limit of the normal value. In this article, we shall see how hypoglycemia, stands out as an important topic that every diabetic patient should be aware of, in lieu of the significant toll it could take on their health.

Normal blood sugar levels in human beings usually range from 70 to 140 mg/dL depending on various factors throughout the day. Hypoglycemia is generally experienced when blood sugar levels drop lower than 60 mg/dL. It is almost always seen only in diabetic subjects on treatment with insulin or with some types of oral anti-diabetic medications. It is seldom encountered in a normal non-diabetic person or a diabetic subject who is not on any drug treatment for diabetes. Exceptions may be times of starvation or unusually intense physical activity, which occur more often in children than adults.

Hypoglycemia occurs in a diabetic patient due to one or more of the following scenarios:

The patient takes the drug but does not have the meal at the right time in relation with the drug intake as advised by the doctor.
The patient chooses to fast or has very little food on any given day after taking the regular medications.
The patient delays any meal for long hours. For example, it is common for people having a late lunch after taking medications in the morning to experience hypoglycemic episodes at noon.
The dosage of the medication is high or the patient’s drug requirement has recently decreased due to improvement in their blood sugar control.
The patient is dehydrated due to vomiting or diarrhea.
The patient subjects themselves to unaccustomed physical exertion.
The patient has kidney problems leading to poor excretion of the anti-diabetic medications leading to repetitive low sugar episodes.

Sudden hunger, shivering, palpitation and sweating are the initial warning signals of a hypoglycemic episode. Left untreated, hypoglycemia can lead to loss of concentration, drowsiness, confusion, speech difficulty, incoordination, visual disturbance and even to loss of consciousness. Frequent hypoglycemic episodes can cause memory loss in the long-term. Hypoglycemic episodes occur more frequently and are more severe in intensity in type 1 diabetic subjects than those with type 2 diabetes.

The immediate treatment for a hypoglycemic episode is to administer oral glucose preferably in a liquid form, i.e., either to give normal table sugar or glucose powder mixed in any beverage or in the worst case, with water. This is advocated rather than just pouring solid sugar crystals into the patient’s mouth because as the hypoglycemia becomes severe, the saliva in the mouth dries up and so, it is difficult for the sugar crystals to get absorbed. If the patient comes back to normalcy within a few minutes, no other treatment is required. But once a patient becomes unconscious or reaches a stage wherein it becomes impossible to feed them orally or develops repetitive hypoglycemic episodes, emergency hospitalization is mandatory because glucose has to given through injections and the patient also needs to be evaluated for other causes for the coma.

In order not to risk becoming hypoglycemic in public, diabetic patients on drug treatment are requested to always carry chocolates with them whenever they go out of the house. This helps a lot because they can take a chocolate immediately after they sense the initial symptoms of their low blood sugar level instead of allowing it to progress into a full-blown hypoglycemic episode.

Hypoglycemic episodes pose a big challenge in patients having diabetes for a long time because they are more prone to develop a condition called Hypoglycemia Unawareness in which they do not experience the classical alert signals of the condition while their blood sugar level is already much lower than normal. This condition occurs due to the patient’s nerves being affected due to long-term diabetes. These patients need to be more careful than others in taking their medication and food at the right time, as they run a higher risk of developing severe and serious complications due to hypoglycemia.

To conclude, hypoglycemia is something like a necessary evil for one who is on drug treatment for diabetes. Best results of diabetes management are seen only with good sugar control but good sugar control always comes with a little risk of hypoglycemia. If we avoid medications for the fear of hypoglycemia, we are almost always sure to face the severe complications of diabetes. But, if we learn to tackle the episodes of hypoglycemia prudently, we can be sure that we are striking the right balance. Balanced diet and right lifestyle are significant factors that influence blood sugar control positively. Needless to say, due to the complicated medical issues involved with diabetes and its treatment, a patient must never self-medicate and should always make it a point to regularly review with their doctor so as to maintain the expected level of sugar control with negligibly minimal low sugar episodes.

அனைவருக்கும் வணக்கம்!

என்னடா பா. ரா. வின் எழுத்துக்கு மறுப்புரை எழுதுவதாகச் சூளுரைத்து விட்டுக் காணாமல் போய்விட்டானே என்று எண்ணிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் போது மீண்டும் வந்துவிட்டேனோ? கவலை வேண்டாம் - நான் சொல்ல வந்ததைச் சொல்லிமுடித்த பின் மீண்டும் (நீங்கள்) காணாமல் தான் (நான்) போகப் போகிறேன் - என் வேலையைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டு!

இவ்வளவு தாமதமாய் வந்ததற்குக் காரணமிருக்கிறது - இப்போதுள்ள பல எழுத்தாளர்களையும் விமர்சகர்களையும் போல எழுதுபொருளைப் பற்றி எதுவுமே தெரியாமல் மனதுக்குத் தோன்றியதையெல்லாம் எழுதுவதில் எனக்கு உடன்பாடில்லை! அதனால் தான் இந்த ஓராண்டு இடைவெளியில் இளையராஜாவின் வெண்பாக்களையும் அவற்றிற்கான் பொழிப்புரைகளையும் அவ்வப்போது படித்துக்கொண்டு இந்த முயற்சிக்காக என்னை நான் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாகத் தயார்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருந்தேன் - எதற்காக என்றால்: எழுதுவது என் கருத்தாக இல்லாமல் உண்மையையொற்றியதாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என நான் விரும்புவதால்!

ஆனால், அவருடைய நிறைய வெண்பாக்களைப் படித்தபின், யாருக்கு பதில் சொல்லி என்ன ஆகப் போகிறது என்று தோன்ற வைத்து விடுகிறார் இளையராஜா! ஆம் – என் உள்ளத்தையும் சிந்தனைகளையும் நான் எண்ணிப்பார்த்தேயிராத வேறோர் தளத்திற்குக் கொண்டு சென்று இயங்கச் செய்கின்றன அவரது எழுத்துக்கள்! ஒரு வேளை பா. ரா. இப்படி ஒரு அதிரடி வேலையைச் செய்திராவிட்டால் இளையராஜாவின் முதல் வெண்பா நூல் வெளியான போது அதைக் கொஞ்சமாய்ப் படித்துப் பார்த்துவிட்டுப் ‘புரியவில்லை’ என்று விட்டுவிட்ட எனக்கு, மீண்டும் அவருடைய வெண்பாக்களைப் பொருளுணர்ந்து படிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் தோன்றாமலேயே இருந்திருக்கலாம்! இதற்காகவே, பா. ரா. வுக்கு என் சிறப்பு நன்றிகளைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்ள நான் கடமைப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன்!

எனினும், செய்வதாகச் சொன்னவற்றைச் செய்யாமல் விட்டுவிடுவது சரியல்ல என்பதால் பா. ரா. விற்கும் அவரது சீடர்களுக்குமான என் பதில்கள் இதோ:

“அவர் ஏன் எழுத விரும்புகிறார் என்கிற கேள்விக்கு பதில் கிடைப்பது சிரமம்.” – இதற்கான பதிலை யாருக்கும் சொல்ல வேண்டிய அவசியம் இளையராஜாவுக்கு இல்லையென்றாலும் அனேகமாய் அவரது ஒவ்வொரு நூலின் முகவுரையிலும் அதைத் தெளிவாகவே விளக்கியிருக்கிறார் அவர். அது சரி, அவற்றையெல்லாம் நாம் படித்தால் தானே ;-)

ஒரு எடுத்துக்காட்டாய், “யாதுமாகி நின்றாய்...” என்ற வெண்பா நூலில் அவர் எழுதிய முன்னுரையிலிருந்து: “இசையை வேலையாகச் செய்யும் வேளையில் – ஏதாவது ஒரு நேரம் சும்மா இருக்க நேர்ந்தால் – இந்த மனமானது சும்மா இருக்க விடுவதில்லை! – சரி ஏதாவது செய்யலாம் என்றால் – பக்கத்தில் இருப்பது பேனாவும் பேப்பரும் தான். அப்படியே கையில் எடுத்து ஏதாவது எழுதத் தொடங்கினால் – அது – இப்படித்தான் உங்கள் கையிலிருக்கும் வெண்பாக்களாக வருகிறது. நான் என்ன செய்ய?” – இன்னும் நிறைய சொல்கிறார் – அவற்றை இப்போதாவது அந்நூலைப் படித்துத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள், உங்களுக்கு மனமிருந்தால்!

“ஆனால் அதை ஏன் எல்லோரும் தூக்கித் தலையில் வைத்துக் கொண்டாடுகிறார்கள் என்பது புரியவில்லை. வாழ்நாளெல்லாம் புகழ்ந்து தீர்க்க அவருடைய இசை இருக்கிறது. போதாதா? எதற்காக அவரைக் கொம்பு சீவி விட்டு வெண்பாவும் விருத்தமும் எழுத அல்ல - யாக்க வைக்கிறார்கள் என்று தெரியவில்லை.” – தூக்கித் தலையில் வைத்துக் கொண்டாடுவதில் இளையராஜாவுடைய தவறு என்னவென்று எனக்குப் புரியவில்லை. இக்கேள்வியை நீங்கள் அவரை அப்படித் தூக்கி வைத்துக் கொண்டாடுபவர்களிடம் தான் கேட்டிருக்க வேண்டும். அவருடைய இசையை மட்டும் தான் வாழ்நாளெல்லாம் புகழ்ந்து தீர்க்க வேண்டும் என்பது உங்களுடைய விருப்பமாக இருக்கலாம். அதனாலேயே, அவருடைய மற்ற திறமைகளை வேறு யாரும் கூடப் பாராட்டக் கூடாதா? அவரை ஒரு புலவராகப் பார்க்க உங்களுக்குப் பிடிக்கவில்லையென்றால் அதைப் பொதுவிதியாக்க நினைக்கிறீர்களோ? சென்ற பத்தியில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ள அவருடைய சொற்களிலேயே அவர் அவராகவே தான் எழுதுகிறார் என்பது தெளிவாகிறது – அவரைப் போய் யார் கொம்பு சீவி விட முடியும்? நல்ல நகைச்சுவை, போங்கள்!

“மௌனம், மரணம், தவம், மனிதன், ஆத்மா, உள்ளே, வெளியே, வானம், வெட்டவெளி, அறிந்தவை, அறியாதவை, விடுதலை, வேள்வி என்று வரிசையாக நூறு சொற்களை இந்த ரகத்தில் எடுத்து வைத்துக்கொண்டு பெர்முடேஷன் காம்பினேஷனில் தொகுத்தால் கிடைக்கக்கூடிய கவியுருவங்கள் அவருடையவை. ” – சிரிக்கத் தான் தோன்றுகிறது, பா. ரா. சாரே! உங்கள் கவிஞானம் இவ்வளவு தானா? சரி, உரைநடையில் உலகசரித்திரங்கள் எல்லாம் எழுதும் உங்களுக்குச் செய்யுள் இலக்கணமும் பொருள்கோளும் இலக்கியரசனையும் வாழ்வியல் உண்மைகளும் புரியும் என்று நாங்கள் எதிர்பார்த்தது தவறு தான்! அதெல்லாம் இருக்கட்டும் – நீங்கள் கூறும் இக்கவியுருவங்கள் புதுக்கவிதை வகையில் அவர் எழுதியவை; வெண்பாக்கள் இல்லை. இரண்டு கவி வகைகளுக்கும் உங்களுக்கு வேறுபாடு தெரியும் என் நான் இன்னமும் நம்புகிறேன்! இளையராஜாவின் புதுக்கவிதைகளையே பழிக்க வேண்டுமென்றால் அதற்குமுன் நீங்கள் பல ‘கவிஞர்’களைக் ‘கவனிக்க’ வேண்டியிருக்குமே! அது சரி, நமக்கு இலகுவான இலக்கு இளையராஜா தானே – நாம் ஏன் மற்றவர்களைப் பற்றி எண்ண வேண்டும் ;-)

அடுத்த கருத்துக்குச் செல்லுமுன் நீங்கள் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ள தலைப்புகளில் ஒன்றான ‘விடுதலை’ என்னும் தலைப்பில் இளையராஜா எண்பதுகளின் தொடக்கத்தில் ‘வெட்டவெளிதனில் கொட்டிக்கிடக்குது’ என்னும் நூலில் எழுதிய ஒரு புதுக்கவிதையை என் நினைவிலிருந்து எழுதுகிறேன் – அது எவ்வாறு பெர்முடேஷன் காம்பினேஷனில் தொகுக்கப்பட்டது என நீங்கள் அறிவித்தால் நான் மகிழ்வேன். இதோ அக்கவிதை:

விடுதலையின் தந்தைதான் சர்வாதிகாரம்.

சர்வாதிகாரம் இல்லையெனில் விடுதலைக்குப் பிறப்பேது?

சர்வாதிகாரம் விரும்புவதும் தன் சுதந்திரத்தை!

விடுதலை விரும்புவதும் தன் சுதந்திரத்தை!

விடுதலையும் ஒரு சர்வாதிகாரமே!

உண்மை விடுதலை என்பது

“ஆனால் நேற்றைய விழாவில் அவரை மாணிக்கவாசகராகவும் சுந்தர மூர்த்தி நாயனாராகவும் பத்ரகிரியாராகவும் பட்டினத்தாராகவும் உருவகப்படுத்தி (ஒரு அம்மாள் - அவர் ஒரு புகழ்பெற்ற பட்டிமன்றப் பேச்சாளர், பெயர் மறந்துவிட்டது. அறுபத்தி நாலாவது நாயன்மார் என்றே அடித்துச் சொல்லிவிட்டுப் போய்விட்டார்.) பேசிய தமிழறிஞர்களின் வீர உரைகளைக் கேட்டபோது அடிவயிறு கலங்கிவிட்டது. சுகி. சிவமும் தெ.ஞானசுந்தரமும் இளையராஜாவைக் காட்டிலும் சிறந்த புலவரே இல்லை என்று பேசுவதைக் கேட்டால், இத்தனை காலம் இவர்கள் வாயாரப் புகழ்ந்த கம்பனும் பாரதியும் அரை டிரவுசர் அணிந்து ராஜாவின் முன் மண்டியிட்டு அமர்ந்து யாப்பிலக்கணமும் இன்னபிறவும் படிக்கவேண்டுமென்று சொல்லாமல் சொல்லுவது போல் இருந்தது.” – பேசிய பிரபலத்தின் பெயரை மறந்துவிட்டாலும் அவர் சொன்ன கருத்தை ‘மறக்காமல்’ வைத்திருக்கிறீர்களே – சபாஷ்! அது இருக்கட்டும் - அப்பேச்சாளர்கள் அப்படிப் பேசினால் அதற்கு இளையராஜா என்ன செய்வார்? புலவர்கள் பொதுவாகவே மொழியழகுக்காகவும் கருத்துச்சுவைக்காகவும் கொஞ்சம் மிகைப்படுத்திப் பேசுபவர்கள். இன்னும் சொல்லப் போனால், மிகை என்பது கவியின் இன்றியமையாததோர் அங்கம் என்று நான் உங்களுக்குக் கூற வேண்டியதில்லை! அது ஒரு வேளை எல்லை மீறிப் போயிருந்தாலும், புகழ்பவர்களை விட்டுவிட்டுப் புகழப்படுபவரைச் சாடுவதில் என்ன நியாயம்?

“அத்தனாம்பெரிய தமிழறிஞர்களெல்லாம் புகழ்கிறார்களே என்று அவரும் தம்பங்குக்கு எம்பாவாய், எம்பாவாய் என்று வம்படியாக த் திருவெம்பாவை ஸ்டைலில் பா, பாவாகப் பாடிப் பொழிந்து தீர்க்கிறார்.” – யாருடைய புகழ்ச்சிக்காகவும் அவர் எழுதத் தொடங்கவில்லை என்பதை அவர் தெளிவாகப் பல இடங்களில் எழுதியும் கூறியும் இருக்கிறார். மேற்குறிப்பிட்ட ‘யாதுமாகி நின்றாய்...’ முன்னுரை அதற்கு ஒரு உதாரணம். இன்னும் சொல்லப் போனால், அதீதமான புகழ்ச்சி தான் அவரை வெறுப்பேற்றும் என்பதை நான் கோவையில் 2002-ஆம் ஆண்டில் நடந்த இது போன்ற ஒரு நூல் அறிமுக விழாவில் கண்கூடாகப் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். அவரோடு கொஞ்சமாவது பழகக்கூடிய வாய்ப்பைப் பெற்றவன் என்ற முறையில் ‘அவர் வெற்றுப் புகழ்ச்சியை விரும்புபவர்’ என்று நீங்கள் சொல்வதை நான் வன்மையாக மறுக்கிறேன்.

“இளையராஜாவுக்குச் செய்யுள் என்பது சர்க்கரை வியாதிக்காரருக்குச் சிறுநீர்போல் தங்குதடையற்றுப் பொழிந்துகொண்டே இருக்கிறது. இதன் அபாயம் என்பது சர்க்கரை வியாதியின் அபாயமேதான் என்பது ஏன் அவருக்குப் புரியவில்லை என்று தெரியவில்லை.” – கண நேரத்தில் மிகச்சிறப்பானதொரு படைப்பை உருவாக்கக் கூடிய ஒரு அசாதாரணக் கலைஞனை இதற்கு மேல் யாரும் அவமானப்படுத்த முடியுமா என்பது சந்தேகமே! ‘நான் அவரது இசையைச் சொல்லவில்லை; எழுத்தைத்தான் சொன்னேன்’ என நீங்கள் கூறலாம். உங்கள் பாணியில் ஆதாரமில்லாமல் வெறும் ‘கருத்து’பூர்வமாக விமர்சிப்பதென்றால் அவரது இசையைக் கூட இப்படி விமர்சிக்கலாம்! எல்லாம் சரி, நீங்கள் சொல்வது போல் அவர் எழுத்தில் சரக்கே இல்லை என்று வைத்துக் கொண்டாலும், அவர் ஏன் எழுதுகிறார் எனக் கேட்பதற்கும் எழுத்து மீதான படைப்புசார் விமர்சனம் என்பதை மீறி அசிங்கமான சொற்களைப் பயன்படுத்துவதற்கும் நீங்கள் யார்? ‘நீங்கள் எழுதுவது எழுத்தே இல்லை; அது எனக்குப் பிடிக்கவில்லை; அதனால் இனி நீங்கள் எழுதக்கூடாது’ என்று நான் சொல்கிறேன் என்று வைத்துக் கொள்வோம். அப்படி நான் சொல்வது சரி என்று நீங்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொள்வீர்களா திரு பா. ரா. அவர்களே?

இதெல்லாம் இருக்கட்டும் – “இதன் அபாயம் என்பது சர்க்கரை வியாதியின் அபாயமே தான்” என்று எழுதியிருக்கிறீர்களே, இது என்ன என்று சர்க்கரைநோய்க்கு மருத்துவம் பார்க்கும் எனக்கே புரியவில்லை! இளையராஜா இதில் எதைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கிறீர்கள் ஐயா? ஒரு வேளை நீரிழிவு நோய் மருத்துவத்தைப் பற்றிக் கூட நீங்கள் கட்டுரை எழுதத் தொடங்கிவிட்டீர்களோ? அதுவும் நல்லது தான் – இனிமேல் மருத்துவர்கள் அவர்களுடைய நூல்களைப் படிக்காமல் உங்கள் கட்டுரைகளை ஆராய்ந்தாலே தங்கள் துறையில் மேதைகளாகி விடலாம்! என்னே உங்கள் மருத்துவ சேவை!

ரம்பாவைப் பற்றி நீங்கள் சொன்ன வெண்பா உண்மையாகவே நன்றாகத் தான் இருந்தது! வெண்பா இலக்கணத்தில், ஏதேனும் உயர்ந்த பொருளைப் பற்றி மட்டுமே வெண்பாக்கள் பாடப்பட வேண்டும், என்றொரு விதி இருப்பதாக எனக்குத் தெரியவில்லை! அதனால் தான், ரம்பாவைப் பற்றிய உங்களுடைய வெண்பாவை என்னால் பாவாய் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடிகிறது! ஆனால், உலக வாழ்க்கையைத் தாண்டி இறையை நோக்கிப் பாடப்பட்ட இளையராஜாவின் பாக்களை (இலக்கண விதிகளுக்கு உட்பட்டிருந்தாலும்) வெண்பாக்களாக ஏற்பதில் இருந்து உங்களை எது தடுக்கிறது என்றெனக்குப் புரியவில்லை! உங்களால் விளக்க முடியுமா?

“இவர்களையெல்லாம் கவிஞர்கள், புலவர்கள் என்று அங்கீகரித்து, கிரீடம் சூட்டிவிட்டால் தாளுக்கும் மைக்கும்தான் கேடு. ” – இதிலிருந்து ஒன்றே ஒன்று தான் தெளிவாகிறது. அது – வாஜ்பாயியோ, அப்துல் கலாமோ, இளையராஜாவோ அல்லது வேறு யாராவதோ – இவர்கள் யாருமே எழுத்துத்துறையில் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்டுவிடக்கூடாது என்று உங்களுக்குள் ஒலித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு எச்சரிக்கைக் குரல்! படைப்பதற்கும் அங்கீகரிக்கப்படுவதற்கும் எல்லோர்க்கும் உரிமை உண்டு – அதை ஒருவர் எதிர்ப்பதென்றால் அது படைப்பின் மீதான விமர்சனமாக மட்டுமே இருக்கவேண்டும்! இப்படி எந்த மேற்கோளும் காட்டாமல் வெறும் தனிமனித விருப்பு வெறுப்புகளை மனதில் கொண்டு ஒரு படைப்பாளரை மொத்தமாகவே நிராகரிப்பதும் ஒரு வகையான தீவிரவாதம் தான் என்பது உலகத் தீவிரவாதத்தைப் பற்றிய பேராசிரியரான உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாமல் இருக்காது என நான் நம்புகிறேன்.

“ஏற்கெனவே பாரதியாருக்குக் குறிவைத்து ஏதோ ஒரு காரியம் செய்திருக்கிறார் போலிருக்கிறது. வெளிவரவிருக்கும் ‘அஜந்தா' என்கிற படத்தில் டைரக்டருக்கும் தயாரிப்பாளருக்கும் தெரியாமல் தானே ஏதோ ஒரு பாடல் அல்லது செய்யுள் 'யாத்து' பாடி இணைத்துவிட்டதாகப் பேசும்போது குறிப்பிட்டார். அது பாரதியாருக்கு என்னவோ ஒரு பதில் சொல்கிறதாம். ” – ஐயா பா. ரா. அவர்களே! இளையராஜா பாரதியாருக்கு இப்போதல்ல, நீண்டநாட்களாகவே பதில் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்! எடுத்துக்காட்டு:

‘வீதியில் இசைத்தாலும் வீணைக்கு இசையுண்டு

வீணாகிப் போகாது கேட்கின்ற நெஞ்சுண்டு

வேய்ங்குழல் பாடுது வீணையொடு’

என்ற வரிகள் (பாடல்: உன் குத்தமா; படம்: அழகி).

திரைப்படத்தில் இப்பாடலுக்கான சூழ்நிலைப்படி, அழகான பெண்ணை விரும்பும் ‘அத்தனை அழகில்லாத’ நாயகன் அவளை வீணையாகவும் தன்னை வேய்ங்குழலாகவும் எண்ணி, அவளை நிராதரவாய் வீதியில் பார்க்கும் போது, மனதிற்குள் பாடிக்கொள்ளும் நிலைக்கு இது பொருந்தும்! அதே நேரம் அந்த வரிகளில் இன்னொரு பொருளை மறைத்து வைத்ததை இளையராஜா பின்னாளில் விவரித்தார்.

நல்லதோர் வீணையாகத் தன்னைச் செய்தும் ஏன் புழுதியில் எறிந்தாள் என்று சிவசக்தியைக் கேட்கும் பாரதிக்கு ‘வீதியில் இருக்கிறோம் என்று கவலைப்படாதே; எங்கிருந்தாலும் வீணை இசையைப் பொழிவதைப் போலே எவ்விடமிருந்தாலும் நீ பாடு; அந்தப் பாட்டு வீணாகிப் போகாது – ஏனென்றால் அதை கேட்க நானுண்டு, என் நெஞ்சுண்டு – கிராமத்திலிருந்து வந்த நான், நிரம்பப் படித்த உன்னுடன், வீணையுடன் வேய்ங்குழல் இசைப்பது போலே சேர்ந்து பாடுவேன்’ என்று பதில் சொல்வதாகச் சொன்னார்.

இதை எழுதியவர் வேறொரு கவிஞரென்றால் இதற்கு பாராட்டு விழா எடுக்கலாம்! ஆனால், இது இளையராஜா எழுதிய பாட்டாயிற்றே! அது சரி, இசைத்தாயின் தலைமகன் இசையை மட்டும் கவனித்தால் போதும் என்று நீங்கள் எப்படிக் கூற முடியும்? ஒரு வேளை எழுத்தாளர்களுக்கு யாருக்கு வேண்டுமானாலும் கட்டளையிடும் உரிமை உள்ளதோ? அது எனக்குத் தான் தெரியவில்லையோ ஐயா?

பதிவின் இறுதிக்கட்டத்திற்கு வந்தாகிவிட்டது! இன்னமும் ஒரு வெண்பாவைக் கூட முழுமையாக எழுதாமல் எப்படி? இதோ வந்துவிட்டது இளையராஜாவின் வெண்பாக்களில் ஓரளவுக்கு புரிந்துகொள்வதற்குச் சுலபமான ஒன்று:

"பிழைகளைப் பாடினேன் என்றன் பிழையோ?

பிழைபாட ஏன் பணித்தாய் பித்தனே? பித்தாய்ப்

பிழையைப் பிறப்பித்து நீயோ பிழைப்பாய்!

பிழையின் பிழையைத் திருத்து."

இத்துடன் என் வாதத்தை நான் முடித்துக்கொள்கிறேன். நான் எழுதியிருப்பது உண்மை என்பதில் எனக்குச் சிறிதேனும் ஐயம் இல்லாததால், இந்த வாதத்திற்குத் தீர்ப்பு தேடி நான் வேண்டி நிற்கப் போவதில்லை. இந்தப் பதிவைப் படிப்பவர்கள் இதிலுள்ள உண்மைத்தன்மையை தங்கள் மனங்களினுள் உணர்ந்தால் அதுவே எனக்குப் போதுமானது!

My first publication in an international medical journal!

At the outset, let me wish you all a very Happy New Year for welcoming 2010!

At the fag end of 2009, I am very glad to share with you that my second medical article (first in an international journal) has been published in the January 2010 edition of the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology.

The article is titled 'Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Disease in Type 2 Diabetes: The Indian Scenario'. At this moment, I thank my teacher Prof V Mohan for including me in the writing of this article. This article will be available only by paid download from the journal's site for a period of one year from the date of publication.

To the twinkling stars - I tell a word,
You are dead altars - the truth appears weird!
Still you're adored by this dunces' old world:
As synonymous with the great Santa Claus' beard!

Oh! Mother Earth - Her feminine nature matches none:
Obviously, of these labyrinthine minds, She's just one!
Stars may give Her the melody of enchanting tone;
But will they ever cater to Her the peacock throne?

There's something to say on the milky Moon -
Would it become evergreen to enlighten the noon?
Hope says the boon will arrive very soon:
Before the speculations avalanche a mental typhoon!

Worldly wise people know what's that's real
Living closest star that grants all the fuel -
To run life on the globe in this trial
Method of life - the Sun which's the revival!

There the dawn's approaching - the night to end
When His omnipotent rays - come to mend

SMS Poem - 1 - Life, The Teacher

Hi All,

I am back to blogging after a long time! I didn't want 2008 to end incompletely and hence, thought of marking this return on 31-Dec-08 itself, by publishing this 'SMS Poem' that I wrote quite long ago! I call this an 'SMS Poem' as it was first written as a short message on my mobile phone and more so because it consists exactly of 160 characters, as in a regular SMS. I have some more of them in stock and intend to publish them if readers find this one interesting. Now, here is the first 'SMS Poem', which I've titled as 'Life, The Teacher' as I type this post:

Years leapt fast; metamorphoses came in;
Trials passed struggles as verdicts;
Maturity was the gain & limitation, the lesson.
Still, the heart aims to be ideal!

At last, I have succeeded in my attempt to blog in Tamil! I am glad that the success has coincided with our 60th Independence Day! For those who do not know Tamil, here is the English translation. At this juncture, I must thank my friends Dr Karthika Ramanand and Dr Anandhi Rajkumar for authoring the translation. Please let me know your comments on the thought, wording and the impact of the poem. Now, here you are:

An Indian tells the world

We do not believe that any revolution is violent; that is why
We taught you that independence can be won by non-violence (ahimsa).
We strongly believe that all wounds will eventually heal; that is how
We grew out of the pain of partition and now live as one family.

We never longed for others’ belongings; that is why
Our forces are only for our self-defense and for your help.
Our constitution is secular; that is how
We overcame our diversities and now stand together as Indians.

Like any other family, we too may have our issues; However,
We will resolve them without any external interference.
‘Divide and rule’ may have worked in the past but not now; for

நாங்கள் உங்களுக்குத் தரவேண்டியது எங்கள் தலைமையின் பலனைத் தான்! ஆம்!
வல்லரசாய் நல்லரசாய் நாங்கள் வளர வழிவிடுங்கள் - அடுத்த தலைமுறையில்

Let me know how you liked this long poem! I wrote this in 1997 for our Coimbatore Medical College's magazine, which was released in 1998!

Kindly read 'idipparoru medhaiyai' as 'izhapparoru medhaiyai'! I guess there are no other spelling mistakes. I hope you also enjoy the footer written by my senior.

Improvised version published in 2000!

Dear Friends,

Here is the improvised version of the poem mentioned in my first post. This was published in our college magazine released in the year 2000. I altered the poem to make it look more mature in terms of relevance of content and choice of words, but am not sure if I really succeeded or not! So, you have to tell me what you feel! Which of the two is better?

I hope you won't mind the minor spelling errors and the playful comments of the editors of the college magazine, because it is ought to be that way!

My first poem!

Dear Friends,

I feel glad to start posting on my blog with the first of the most organised and available poems that I have written so far. Have a glimpse and let me know what you feel!

It was written on December 14, 1995 in my XII standard half-yearly examination's Tamil paper and my Tamil teacher's good remarks for it inspired me more till what I am now and what I am to become in future! Let me thank her (Ms Kousalya, Tamil teacher, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore) for starting all these!
